“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

P.A.C.E. stands for Prevention of Stroke Through Education in Spanish (Prevención de la derrame cerebral a través de la educación).

Dorita uses the metaphor of Charon, the centaur who taught Aesculapius the first doctor as well as tamed Hercules and other heroes of Greek myth as the logo of her new endeavor, The PACE Group, Prevention of Stroke Through Education because this mythical magical being was able to communicate about life and health through many modalities. As she approaches her 90th birthday she hasn't been bowed down long by her two strokes but rather used them to learn to teach prevention to minorities and seniors. She needs your help to continue this work as well as pass on her knowledge to the next generation of instructors.

Dorita wishes to continue her work of educating fellow Stroke victims as well as people with the potential for Stroke through the following work:

  • Create support groups for one-on-one and facilitated discussions of the personal effects of Stroke. It's a sad truth many people who are survivors seem to be ostracized by society in general.  People are under the negative assumption that stroke is catching like the flu.  The support groups provide an exchange and interchange between survivors. Dorita is continuing her work with the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Rehabilitation monthly Spanish Language Stroke Support Group via TV hookup discussing such side effects of stroke as aphasia and depression.
  • Create and maintain a website with tools such as a catalog of online resources, important article links and a blog to disseminate information about healthy living before and after Stroke as well as personal stories about people who've had Strokes.

  • Publish her extensive bilingual lectures in the form of PowerPoints and e-books allowing others to take up public lectures for Hispanics and other high-risk groups.

  • Continue publishing articles and books on the subject of successful aging with disabilities.

DoritaDelemos 300x400In 2014, Dorita DeLemos Down established “The P.A.C.E. Group, LLC”, under which she writes a blog and continues to lecture and write articles on brain injuries and stroke.  Recent information has proven that “The more you work with the brain, the healthier it becomes”.  She is a good example of that statement. From 2005 to 2008 she was engaged as Spanish language Consultant to NIH/NINDS and participated in lectures, conferences, and conventions nationwide.
